KFIA ANNUAL MEETING - “Weathering the Storms”

The Kentucky Forest Industries Association (KFIA) recently completed a successful 54th Annual Meeting in Lexington, Kentucky at the Embassy Suites. The meeting was held April 2-4, 2019 and was well attended by over 375 members and 37 exhibitors. The KFIA Annual Meeting serves as the premier event for the hardwood industry in Kentucky.

The meeting got underway with 73 golfers of all talents participating in the John C. Smith Invitational Golf Scramble weathering a cool morning but then a warm beautiful day on the golf course. Followed by the KFIA Board of Directors meeting and a Welcome Reception with the announcement of the golf outing results.

On Wednesday we opened with a legislative and association update provided by KFIA Executive Director Bob Bauer followed by Dana Lee Cole who updated Hardwood Federation issues in Washington DC and the impact on the timber industry.  With so many topics to discuss we altered our past schedule to include an opening session that began with Bryan Alvey, Director of Governmental Affairs for the KY Distillers Association discussing bourbon demand (click to download presentation)  and Jordy Jordahl, Interim Director of the National White Oak Initiative talked about the continued advancement of the initiative (click to download presentation). The opening session ended with Jason Lupardus, Director of Conservation Operations with the National Wild Turkey Federation presenting information on investments by the Federation in forest management activities in Kentucky and throughout the region (click to download presentation).  The KY Tree Farm Awards Luncheon followed with guest speaker Kentucky Department of Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles highlighting the partnerships that are being developed with the wood products industry.  Special presentations were made to those who have supported the industry and forestry in Kentucky.

Those recognized at the luncheon were:

Jeff Caldwell, Missouri Walnut – Robbins, TN

New elected Directors:
Brian Johnson, Koppers Inc. - Bon Aqua, TN
Justin Nichols, Benton Wood Products - Benton, KY
William (Bill) Perry, Powell Valley Millwork, Clay City, KY

After the luncheon the Sustainable Forestry Implementation Committee met and reviewed funding projects and related issues.  Of course the afternoon would not have been complete without New Orleans seafood and some great hospitality supplied by Robinson Lumber Co., New Orleans, LA and longtime KFIA sponsor Van Meter Insurance.

Thursday morning began with the General Session discussing recent issues with hardwood market exports and tariffs, Tom Inman, President of the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc. (AHMI) provided a great presentation about the tariffs and the direction of exporting (click to download presentation).  John Sullivan, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, with the National Weather Service talked about the weather effects on the wood products and forestry community throughout the region (click to download presentation).  The final topic was a look at recent research and developments related to sawdust utilization that is taking place at the University of Kentucky presented by Tom Keene, University of Kentucky Department of Agriculture (click to download presentation).

The meeting was a tremendous success and those in attendance gained valuable information while having time to network with others in the hardwood industry from throughout the country.  KFIA is pleased to announce that the 2020 Annual Meeting will be in Louisville, KY at the Brown Hotel on April 7-9.
